Code of Ethics for Soccer Officials
As soccer officials, we serve the game, its players, coaches, and spectators with integrity, fairness, and professionalism. To uphold the highest standards of conduct, every official shall:
- Maintain Personal Integrity
Never officiate any match after consuming alcohol or any substance that may impair judgment, performance, or professionalism.
- Act Impartially and Professionally
Avoid conversations or interactions with spectators, coaches, or team personnel before, during, or after a match that could compromise—or appear to compromise—neutrality.
- Avoid Conflicts of Interest
Do not solicit or request game assignments from coaches, teams, or leagues. Officials must remain free from any obligation to individuals or organizations involved in matches they may be assigned to.
- Be Physically and Mentally Prepared
Maintain the physical fitness, mental focus, and emotional control necessary to perform officiating duties effectively.
- Be Reliable and Punctual
Arrive on time, properly equipped, and ready to officiate at all assigned matches.
- Apply the Rules (Laws) of the Game with Fairness
Exercise authority firmly but without arrogance or unnecessary showmanship. Avoid being over-officious or drawing attention away from the players and the match itself.
- Avoid Bias or the Appearance of Bias
Do not accept assignments for schools, clubs, or teams with which you have a personal, professional, or financial connection—unless explicitly permitted by the assigning authority.
- Maintain Professional Boundaries
Keep all relationships with coaches, players, and team affiliates at an appropriate professional distance, both on and off the field.
- Respect Fellow Officials
Do not publicly criticize, undermine, or attempt to justify another official’s decision. Concerns should be addressed privately and through appropriate channels.
- Communicate with Players Respectfully
Avoid arguments. Listen courteously to reasonable questions and provide clear, concise explanations when appropriate.
- Support Learning and Fair Play
When requested at a proper time, assist players or coaches in understanding the Rules (Laws) of the Game to promote sportsmanship and education.
- Give Your Best Every Match
Approach every game with full effort, fairness, and dedication, regardless of the level of competition.
- Exemplify Sportsmanship and Leadership
Demonstrate loyalty, courage, integrity, self-discipline, and respect for all participants in the sport.
- Uphold the Reputation of Soccer Officiating
Conduct yourself with professionalism, integrity, and respect both on and off the field, including on social media and in public settings.
- Promote Inclusivity and Respect
Treat all participants with dignity and fairness, regardless of race, color, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, age, or ability. Create an environment that fosters respect for all.
- Prioritize Safety
Place the physical and emotional safety of players, fellow officials, and spectators above all other considerations. Take appropriate action to prevent or respond to unsafe conditions or behavior.
